To address and forestall any form of
clash between Abia farmers and Fulani herdsmen,
the Police in the state have taken proactive steps
that will ensure both parties co-inhabit peacefully.
One of the measures adopted was bringing
together all interested parties to a round table
where they were afforded the opportunities to air
their views and suggest ways to improve on the
existing relationship.
The Commissioner of Police Leye Oyebade harped
on the readiness of the police and other sister
security agencies to always give all the necessary
security needed by any of the groups to work
freely so far it doesn’t cause a breach of the right
of the other party.
He maintained that although the constitution of
the Federal republic of Nigeria guarantees the
freedom to live and work in any part of the
country, he cautioned the herdsmen to also
respect the laws of the land and their host
communities.
He added that the peaceful coexistence between
the farmers and the cattle rearers will play a major
role in Nation building especially now that the
Federal Government is working very hard to
diversify the economy through Agriculture.
At the end of meeting the parties were made to
agree to a peace pact with the police warning to
deal with any of the parties who breach the
agreements.
